Salt-marsh Harvest Mouse

(Reithrodontomys raviventris)

The Salt-marsh Harvest Mouse (SMHM) is endemic (only found) in the Bay Area. It’s a special status species and is listed as Federally Endangered and State Threatened. They live in the salt marshes around the bay, though you’ll probably never see one since they’re both highly secretive and nocturnal. Fortunately for me, I often help my coworker survey for SMHM and I handle them as we release them after trapping and taking data on them
