Peringuey's adder

(Bitis peringueyi)

When the sand stares back.

This is a photo I've always dreamed of capturing. Peringuey's adder (Bitis peringueyi) are so alien-looking. I loved watching these snakes dig themselves into the sand and then, once buried, clear the sand from those large nostrils in a dusty huff.

This is the first photo I have had go truly viral. If you click the “Media” tab in the header, you can read the articles that were written about it.
